A plain-English guide to the network: which line goes where, how the operators connect and the ticket that avoids a wrong turn at the gate.

Naples has no single “metro company.” ANM, Trenitalia and EAV run different pieces of the urban and regional rail network, connected by a shared set of interchange stations.

For most city sightseeing, Line 1 is the backbone. Line 2 crosses east–west, Line 6 follows the western waterfront, four funiculars climb the hills, and EAV trains take you toward Pompeii, Sorrento, Pozzuoli and Aversa.

Four hill railways, plus Cumana, Circumflegrea, Circumvesuviana and Metro Arcobaleno regional links.

From the apartmentDuomo on Line 1 is about ten metres from Palazzo Nanà. For the central station take the train toward Centro Direzionale and exit at Garibaldi; for the port and west-central sights travel in the Piscinola direction.

Line 1: Centro Direzionale to Piscinola

ANM Line 1 makes a long curve from the business district through Napoli Centrale, the historic centre, the port, Via Toledo, the archaeological museum, Vomero and the hospital zone before reaching Piscinola. Its central stations are also part of Naples’ celebrated public-art programme.

All Line 1 stations, in order

Centro Direzionale → Garibaldi → Duomo → Università → Municipio → Toledo → Dante → Museo → Materdei → Salvator Rosa → Quattro Giornate → Vanvitelli → Medaglie d’Oro → Montedonzelli → Rione Alto → Policlinico → Colli Aminei → Frullone → Chiaiano → Piscinola.

  • PiscinolaInterchange with EAV Metro Arcobaleno toward Mugnano, Giugliano and Aversa.

Current ANM service normally begins around 06:00. Sunday–Thursday service finishes around 23:00, with later Friday and Saturday trains. Always check the official Line 1 timetable on the day because works, events and strikes can alter service.

Line 2: the Trenitalia cross-city line

Line 2 is a metropolitan railway operated by Trenitalia, not ANM. It connects the eastern city with Garibaldi, the museum area, Montesanto, Chiaia, Mergellina, Fuorigrotta, Bagnoli and Pozzuoli. Train destinations may extend beyond the core metro section, so read platform screens as well as the “Line 2” label.

Core stations, east to west

Napoli San Giovanni-Barra → Gianturco → Napoli Piazza Garibaldi → Napoli Piazza Cavour → Napoli Montesanto → Napoli Piazza Amedeo → Napoli Mergellina → Napoli Piazza Leopardi → Napoli Campi Flegrei → Cavalleggeri Aosta → Bagnoli-Agnano Terme → Pozzuoli Solfatara.

Use Line 2 for the stadium and Mostra d’Oltremare at Campi Flegrei, Chiaia via Piazza Amedeo, western waterfront connections at Mergellina and Pozzuoli. The official Trenitalia Line 2 page lists current service details.

Line 6: Municipio to Mostra

Line 6 links the port area with Chiaia, the Riviera, Mergellina and Fuorigrotta. It is operated by ANM and opened across its full current route in 2024. The architecture and site-specific installations make the newer stations worth seeing in their own right.

All Line 6 stations, in order

Municipio → Chiaia → San Pasquale → Arco Mirelli → Mergellina → Lala → Augusto → Mostra.

Key changes are at Municipio for Line 1, Mergellina for Line 2 and Mostra for EAV Cumana plus the nearby Line 2 station at Campi Flegrei. The current published timetable is daytime-only—roughly 07:30 to 14:50—with a frequency around 14 minutes. Verify the official Line 6 timetable before relying on it later in the day.

The four Naples funiculars

ANM’s hill railways are part of the everyday network, not tourist rides. A valid ANM or appropriate integrated ticket covers them.

  • CentraleAugusteo ↔ Corso Vittorio Emanuele ↔ Petraio ↔ Piazza Fuga. Best central route from Via Toledo to Vomero.
  • ChiaiaParco Margherita ↔ Corso Vittorio Emanuele ↔ Palazzolo ↔ Cimarosa. Links Chiaia with upper Vomero.
  • MontesantoMontesanto ↔ Corso Vittorio Emanuele ↔ Morghen. Convenient for San Martino and Sant’Elmo.
  • MergellinaMergellina ↔ Sant’Antonio ↔ San Gioacchino ↔ Parco Angelina ↔ Manzoni. Useful for the western hills.

ANM reports full accessibility at Centrale, Chiaia and Montesanto stations; Mergellina is not yet fully accessible. Check the official funicular status for maintenance closures.

EAV regional rail connections

Circumvesuviana from Porta Nolana or Garibaldi

These lines run around Vesuvius toward destinations including Ercolano, Pompeii and Sorrento, plus routes toward Sarno, Baiano and Acerra. They use separate EAV platforms below or near the main station complex.

Cumana from Montesanto

The coastal western line serves Fuorigrotta, Bagnoli, Pozzuoli and Torregaveta. It also connects with Line 6 at Mostra.

Circumflegrea from Montesanto

The inland western route runs via Pianura and Quarto toward Licola/Torregaveta, depending on current service patterns.

Metro Arcobaleno from Piscinola

EAV’s northern metro continues through Mugnano and Giugliano to Aversa. Change from ANM Line 1 at Piscinola.

Regional works can cause bus replacements. Check the official EAV rail timetable page immediately before a day trip.

Naples Metro tickets and prices

These headline urban fares were checked in October 2026. Fares can change, so confirm on the official ANM ticket page before travel.

TicketCurrent fareUse it for
ANM single ride, Level 1€1.30One trip on urban buses or funiculars; not the Line 1/6 metro ticket.
ANM single ride, Level 2€1.50One journey on ANM Metro Line 1 or Line 6.
Integrated urban, 90 minutes€1.80Transfers between eligible operators/services within the time limit.
ANM daily€4.50Unlimited ANM travel until midnight on the day of validation.
Integrated urban daily€5.40Multiple operators in the Naples urban area until midnight.

The simple decision: if you only need Line 1 or Line 6, buy the €1.50 ANM metro single. If you will change to Trenitalia Line 2, EAV or another operator, ask for the correct integrated or operator-specific ticket for the complete journey. Extra-urban travel to Pompeii, Sorrento or Pozzuoli uses destination-based fares.

Where to buy a Naples Metro ticket

STATION

Ticket machines

Automatic machines are inside Metro Line 1, Line 6 and funicular stations. Select English and check the ticket name before paying.

IN PERSON

ANM Points

Staffed points at places including Garibaldi and Municipio sell main tickets and provide route information.

STREET

Authorised retailers

Look for UnicoCampania-authorised tabacchi, newsstands and bars. State your destination and whether you need a transfer.

PHONE

Official apps

ANM Go and UnicoCampania sell urban tickets. Activate digital tickets exactly as the app instructs before the gate.

CONTACTLESS

Tap&Go

Enabled on ANM Line 1, Line 6 and funiculars. Use the same physical card or phone throughout; do not mix a card with its mobile-wallet version.

LINE 2

Trenitalia channels

Buy Line 2 tickets from station machines, Trenitalia counters or the Trenitalia app, or use a valid integrated urban ticket.

Validate paper tickets before travel and keep every ticket until you have fully exited. Tap&Go on ANM does not mean you can automatically tap the same way on a Trenitalia Line 2 gate—check the reader and signage at the operator change.

Naples Metro FAQ

Can I use a contactless bank card?

Yes at Tap&Go-enabled ANM gates on Lines 1 and 6 and the funiculars. Use one card or one device consistently. Line 2 is run by Trenitalia, so do not assume the ANM tap automatically covers that transfer.

Is Duomo station the nearest station to the apartment?

Yes. Duomo on Line 1 is approximately ten metres from Palazzo Nanà at Piazza Nicola Amore 2.

Does the Metro run to Naples Airport?

Not yet. Use Alibus or an authorised taxi. Alibus connects the airport with Garibaldi/Central Station and the port; from Garibaldi, Line 1 runs one stop to Duomo.

Which ticket covers different companies?

An integrated TIC/UnicoCampania ticket is designed for eligible transfers between operators in the stated zone and time. Tell the app or seller your entire route so you receive the correct ticket.

Are Metro stations accessible?

ANM says Line 1 stations have dedicated accessible paths, but individual lifts and escalators may be under maintenance. Line 2 accessibility varies by station. Check operator accessibility updates before travelling.
